The Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) held a virtual press briefing at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture (MICAF) on May 22 to inform claimants about the bad gas issue which had allegedly caused damage to their vehicles five years ago.

Speaking at his St Lucia office, Minister Floyd Green commended the work of the CAC and in particular, the relentless efforts to ensure that aggrieved consumers are given some reprieve.

He added that the Ministry is looking to strengthen the CAC and have been expanding ways in which consumers can have access to the agency, making it easier for reports to be made.

The Minister of State in MICAF informed that during the Financial Year, the Commission secured $24.5 million on behalf of aggrieved consumers. Over the past 3 years, they secured $72.4 million, an average of 85% resolution each year.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of the CAC, Dolsie Allen stated that of the total 423 claims received from motorists between November 2015 and April 2016, only 381 will receive disbursement – 287 motorists will receive full disbursement and 94 claims will be partial disbursement.

Mrs Allen informed that calls to motorists advising them of the status of their claims have already begun. The CEO advised that motorists should expect the following:

  • To be contacted by the CAC regarding the amount of the approved ex-gratia payment;
  • Receive an appointment for a specific date and time to visit the Commission’s office;
  • A request to present a verifiable and valid Government issued ID;
  • Sign a release and discharge document;
  • Complete a form with banking details.

 Once the above requirements have been completed, the funds will be disbursed electronically to the accounts indicated by the approved claimant and signee.
